Like many residents of Charlotte and Pineville, North Carolina, you may have heard about PRP therapy but aren’t really sure what it entails or how it works. Learning more about this treatment can help you decide if it’s right for you. At Eden MedSpa, we want as many people as possible to benefit from this life-changing procedure. To this end, Dr. Obi has compiled the following FAQs to provide greater insight into this treatment.
PRP stands for Platelet-Rich Plasma. It’s a process that involves drawing your blood, extracting platelets from it, and then injecting the platelets into an injured area of your body to relieve pain and promote faster healing.
PRP therapy can be used to treat a variety of health issues, including osteoarthritis, tendonitis, ligament injuries, and muscle pain. However, PRP therapy isn’t necessarily for everyone. Your overall health, medical history, and the severity of your condition or injury determine your eligibility for this treatment.
You’ll need 1-3 injections, depending on the nature of your injury. You should receive a thorough exam as part of your initial consultation, after which your doctor will explain how many shots you’ll get, how far apart they’ll be spaced (2-4 weeks), and where the shots will be administered.
PRP therapy isn’t a fast cure. It generally takes 2-6 weeks to experience noticeable improvement in your condition. It’s also important to note that the results aren’t permanent. The results can last from six months to two years, depending on the condition being treated.
Since PRP injections use your own blood, there’s no chance of allergic reactions. However, you may experience temporary pain, swelling, and discomfort around the injection site. Major side effects, such as infection, are rare.
If you get an injection in your shoulder, you may need to keep your arm in a sling for several days to a week. Ankle injections may require the use of a walking boot for up to two weeks. If you get an injection in your knee, you should rest for 24 hours before getting back to your regular schedule.
PRP therapy works well alongside physical therapy to help recover from an injury. However, certain medications, such as aspirin and ibuprofen, can affect the effectiveness of this treatment. Blood thinners, corticosteroids, and some supplements can also interfere with PRP therapy. Dr. Obi will discuss this aspect of your treatment with you during your initial consultation.
