Dr. Obinna Oriaku of Eden MedSpa in Charlotte, North Carolina, is a board-certified physician who provides a wide selection of services for men and women at his medical spa. He is pleased to use today’s amazing technology and techniques to ensure safe results and more conservative alternatives to surgical procedures that were once the only option. If you are dealing with hair thinning and loss, he may recommend a treatment known as PRP injections to help. Let’s take a closer look at PRP injections and how they work to restore hair regrowth and thickness.
PRP is an acronym for Platelet-Rich Plasma, and it refers to a procedure where a patient’s blood is drawn and then separated in a centrifuge to obtain a concentrated amount of platelets. Platelets contain growth factors believed to promote tissue repair and regeneration, making PRP injections a popular treatment for hair thinning and loss.
Our provider first draws blood from the patient’s arm during a PRP injection for hair loss. The blood is then spun inside a device called a centrifuge machine to separate the plasma from other components like the red and white blood cells. Once the plasma is extracted, it is injected into areas of hair thinning or loss on the scalp using a fine needle.
Concentrated PRP stimulates hair growth by releasing growth factors and cytokines, which promote cell proliferation and differentiation. These growth factors also increase blood flow to the scalp and nourish the hair follicles, resulting in thicker, healthier hair.
A PRP injection with Dr. Obi of Eden MedSpa typically takes less than an hour to complete. The discomfort of the injections is minimal, as a numbing cream is usually applied beforehand. Some patients might notice mild soreness at the injection site or slight swelling, but these side effects are temporary and should subside within a day or two.
Although individual results may vary, most patients begin to see improvements in their hair growth and thickness within three to six months after their PRP treatment. The full effects of the procedure can usually be seen after one year. Results typically last twelve to eighteen months, but maintenance treatments can help prolong the benefits.
